Stub Out Smokey Joe

The British Heart Foundation and QUIT asked us to help them with the challenging task of educating young people about the harmful effects of smoking. The key objective was to communicate with young people in an engaging and fun way whilst  informing them of the dangers of smoking not only on the body but on others as well as the environment.

Two thirds of smokers start smoking before the age of 18 and one in seven 15 year olds are regular smokers inhaling almost 40 cigarettes each week. The earlier children become regular smokers the greater the risk of developing heart disease – the UK’s biggest killer.

5 million people a year die from smoking related illnesses.

Stub Out Joe is a fast-paced platform game that follows two intrepid explorers Tim and Kym as they set off on a journey through rainforests, cities, fashion shows and sports centres, working their way through five different action-packed levels where they learn about smoking and the tobacco trade, free the hapless smokers from their addiction and face off with the evil Smokey Joe himself!…

After completing each level players are challenged with a multiple choice quiz where their new found knowledge is put to the test. The game ends with a trip to the lair of the evil tobacco boss – the notorious Smokey Joe – and a battle to the bitter end ensues.

Stub Out Joe is a fun way for pupils to learn about the harmful effects of smoking. Children can play casually by themselves or engage through the Schools programme which enables teachers to download valuable teaching notes that serve as the perfect aid for lesson based learning. In this instance the game serves as a rich tool to help reinforce the material covered in the teaching notes.

Smokey Joe is the latest in a series of content commissions we’ve undertaken for the British Heart Foundation. Previous BLOC work for the BHF includes the massively popular Yoobot, the mini-me game. You can read more about Yoobot here.
